Well here we are, it's October and time for our...

Bingo Dinner coming soon...

Mark your calendars for January 23 -- come and enjoy yourselves.

Some people will not be getting their letter/reminder in the mail because they are delinquent in paying their dues. So if a friend or neighbor asks you about the Boys & Girls State Dinner and they haven't gotten an invitation, ask them if they remembered to pay their dues.

If you have not as yet paid your dues and are planning to attend the dinner please come prepared to pay at the door or if you have paid but did not get an invitation please bring your cancelled check so that we can update our records.

"Shave and a Haircut two bits"...

Can you say “buzz cut,” Cheryl Stewart?

Indeed she can, and she did, losing her locks in the process. Stewart commander of Selma¹s American Legion Post 12 had her hair cut off for a good cause: To help veterans who have cancer.

Stewart is passionate about serving people who have served the nation. She got the idea about turning a haircut into a fundraiser at an American Legion convention in June.Stewart then sat for a shearing at an American Legion district meeting in Hanford on Sept. 10, 2011. American Legion friends took turns cutting her hair, and contributing money as they did. It took about an hour to cut off her hair, which was four to five inches long.

It was fun and for a good cause. “My family thought I was crazy,” Stewart said with a laugh. So far she has raised just over $1,100 from American Legion friends, her pinochle-playing buddies at McCall Village and others. Stewart said she¹s thinking of splitting the money between Selma¹s Cancer Support and Nancy Hinds Hospice. She¹s proud to sport the near-bald look. “I¹m not ashamed of it at all,” Stewart said. She definitely showed some heads-up caring for other people.

Pictured at your left is Stan Riggs, First Vice Commander in charge of Membership here at Selma Post 12, taking his turn with the clippers. This was taken shortly before lunch was to be served prior to District Meeting September 10th at the Veterans Memorial Building in Hanford. It's looking a bit ragged as some hurried to finish so it's time to clean it up a bit and move on.

In the last picture the clippers have been handed to Commander Stewart's sister Fran Allen, Membership Chairman for Unit 12 Auxiliary to clean it up so we can get on to the rest of the business at hand for today.

Our heartfelt gratitude to all that have helped make it possible for us to move into Fall knowing that we have been able to contribute to Cancer Research with a nice sized check that none of us are likely to have been able to do on our own at the level that we have been able to do together.

Together we will continue to seek to draw others into the waiting "arms" of our Selma Amercan Legion Family (SelmaALFamily.com) to continue the good works for our Veterans and currently serving "Boys & Girls...Women & Men", many of whom are continuing to give their lives that we may know freedom.
